Star-Cakes
Published 4-25-10
http://www.doaneline.com/frees-halls-star-cake-event-shines-1.2240949
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…there were pancakes.
“Star-Cakes” was the theme of Frees Hall Council’s most recent event.
“Every year Frees Hall has a pancake feed before finals,” said John Carvana, the Frees Hall Council (FHC) President. “And in the past we’ve had simultaneous Star Wars. So when we were trying to figure out programming, we considered having one of these events. But putting the two together just seemed like a good idea.”
The event took place in the basement of Frees, using both the theater and the big-screen TV in the lounge to play the movies. The theater played the movie in order of when the movies were released, whereas the movies were played in sequential order in the lounge.
Pancakes were made by FHC members, as well as members of Residence Life. There were a variety of pancakes made, including blueberry, chocolate chip, butterscotch, white chocolate, and plain.
“I’m glad that some of our RA’s and Hall Council members were able to combine to bring this about,” said Vi Kerhoulas, the RD of Frees and FHC advisor. “I’m a huge Star Wars fan, so that plus pancakes equals awesomeness.”
Kerhoulas said she was pleased with the amount of people who attended the event.
“I’m really happy,” she said. “The turnout wasn’t huge, but we had a good number of people show up.”
Students who attended the event said they had a good time overall.
“I dig on the free pancakes,” freshman Jordan Renkert said. “Plus, I’ve been a big fan of Star Wars since I was about three. I love Darth Vader’s voice; he’s my hero.”
Junior Beth Hein said she attended to event for the pancakes, as well as to see some of her favorite villains.
“I really love pancakes,” Hein said. “They’re delicious, and it’s even better because they don’t cut me off. Seriously, they’re going to have to get a bouncer to say ‘Beth, get out!’ I also really love the villains; I really enjoy them. Emperor Palpatine is my favorite. He was kind of hardcore.”
The marketing for Star-Cakes also attracted some attendees.
“The posters for the event made me laugh the first time I saw them,” freshman Matt Brown said. “Besides, it’s free pancakes and Star Wars, possibly the two best things in the world!”

Forensics Wins 19th at Nationals
Published 4-7-10
http://www.doaneline.com/forensics-wins-19th-at-nationals-1.2213534
Doane College placed 19th at the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET) April 1-4 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Seventy-eight colleges and universities from across the country attended the tournament, and there were no divisions based on school size. Doane was the only liberal arts college from Nebraska to place, and was the second-highest ranked liberal arts college overall (behind Gustavus Aldophus College).
Each year, the top 20 teams at the AFA-NIET receive sweepstakes trophies. It is an honor to be recognized in this category. Less than 10 percent of all students who compete in college forensics ever qualify for this national tournament.
Senior Sarah Snyder was selected for the All-American Team, one of the highest honors given to a student at the AFA-NIET. Ten to 15 individuals are chosen each year based on scholastic achievement, forensics awards, and community service (outside of forensics). This is the fifth consecutive year Doane College has had a student selected for the All-American Team.
Junior Amanda Bouc was a semi-finalist in Communication. She was also a quarter-finalist in both Informative and Persuasive Speaking
Anne DeLuca, junior, advanced to the final round of Poetry Interpretation and placed 6th out of 133 total speakers.
Doane qualified 33 events for the national tournament. Team members in attendance were:
Sarah Snyder (senior, Edison) – Dramatic Duo (with DeLuca), Informative Speaking, After Dinner Speaking, Communication Analysis
Amanda Bouc (junior, Valparaiso) – Informative Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Dramatic Duo (with Leibman), Communication Analysis, After Dinner Speaking
Anne DeLuca (junior, Omaha) – Prose Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Program Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Duo (with Snyder), After Dinner Speaking, Poetry Interpretation

This past weekend, the Doane forensics team won first place at the Novice National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.
The six first-year forensics members competed against teams from across the country at Hutchinson Community College. The tournament was split up into three divisions based on the size of the school, and the Doane team took first place over-all.
Assistant Coach Anne Golden said Doane hasn’t participated in the tournament for several years, but that it was a good way to see what the first-year members are capable of.
“The tournament is split into three rounds of competition,” said Golden. “And then there’s the semi-finals and the finals. So you have to do pretty well in the semi-finals to make it.”

Alternative Spring Break Group Works With Cancer Patients at Hope Lodge
Published 3-16-10
http://www.doane.edu/news/ASB-Hope-Lodge/
Nine Doane College students are spending their spring break in Philadelphia, working for the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge.
Alternative Spring Break is a student organization that travels to a variety of out-of-state locations to complete service-learning opportunities with non-profit organizations.
This year, ASB chose Hope Lodge, a residence center for cancer patients.
"It's a little different this year," said Karla Cooper, Doane Chaplain and an ASB sponsor. "What we'll be doing is less physical; we're going to be doing a lot of emotional and hope support."
ASB's co-sponsor Linda Kalbach agreed that this year's trip is distinctive.
"We are working directly with the people who are receiving help," said Kalbach, assistant professor of education. "Most of our other projects have been about fixing situations. We can't fix their [the cancer patients] situation. We can only try to help them through it."
First-year student Quint Geis said he thought ASB was a good way to spend spring break.
"I didn't want to spend spring break just traveling to some place," Geis said. "We're doing a good thing. We're trying to help as much as we can. It's a great service-learning experience."
Previous trips for ASB have included traveling to Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans to help with hurricane damage, along with working with the Young Women's Christian Association in Oklahoma City, Okla., one year.
Kalbach said one of the aspects of ASB she enjoys the most is seeing students grow over time.
"I like to compare ASB to a garden," Kalbach said. "ASB is the seed, then each student goes through transformation, whether it's understanding or personal growth. One student who participated in ASB changed her career. She got her Masters in Social Work, which she switched to from Art. It was a profound change. It's those people who come back to the garden."
Students participating in the 2010 trip are:
Anh Nguyen, sophomore, Crete
Nick Kissel, first-year student, Omaha
Jessica Brown, first-year, Spirit Lake, Iowa
Quint Geis, first-year student, Henderson
Caitlin Moore, first-year student, Fairmont
Lyndsey Hrabik, first-year student, Murdock
Ashton Kotas, first-year student, Dorchester
Hannah Pittman, first-year student, Pickrell
Amy Petersen, first-year student, Lincoln

Teamwork builds "Swan Condo"
Published 9-15-09
http://www.doane.edu/news/swan-condo/
Frees isn’t the only residence getting an upgrade at Doane.
Doane recently welcomed a new pair of swans, and now there’s a new home for them as well. Their winter housing has been completely renovated.
Dan Meyer, the Director of Planned Giving, helped to build the new shed at his home near Roca.
“The previous shed was falling apart,” said Meyer. “This new one is easier to clean, and I tried to build it in a way I thought looked like a nice home for our most elegant Doane residents.”
The Maintenance department, Advancement department, and the Crete community all pitched in to help bring the “Condo” to life.
“The Maintenance department gave most of the materials,” said Dan Meyer, the Director of Planned Giving. “Brian [Flesner] did all the measurements, True Value of Crete donated the paint, and then I donated my time, and the windows, screws, and things like that. It’s a good reflection on how everyone can work together to make something good happen. That to me is the key.”
Brian Flesner, the Manager of Grounds and Fleet Services for Doane, said he thought it was great the departments could work together to do something fun and creative. “It was a good project, with not a lot of outside resources,” he said.
The Condo’s newest residents were signets of Doane swans from last year. The female was taken from Miller Pond, and the male from Doane Lake.
“There were some concerns at first as to whether they would get along,” said Flesner. “But we haven’t had a single problem. It’s been the best possible scenario.”
This pair is number seven for Doane, which has had swans on campus since 1980’s, said Flesner. The previous male in Miller Pond was attacked and killed by a dog last year, and so the female was removed from the pond, and the new pair replaced them.
“They [the swans] are still figuring things out,” said Flesner.” But I venture to say they’ll be like any other pair we’ve had. They usually live up to 12 years, but depending on their surroundings, they can live up to 20.”
Meyer said he hoped the swans would enjoy their new home.
“The swans are so endearing,” said Meyer. “They’re a great symbol of the campus. It’s nice that they have a nice place to call home. The Swan Condo.”
