A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…there were pancakes.
“Star-Cakes” was the theme of Frees Hall Council’s most recent event.
“Every year Frees Hall has a pancake feed before finals,” said John Carvana, the Frees Hall Council (FHC) President. “And in the past we’ve had simultaneous Star Wars. So when we were trying to figure out programming, we considered having one of these events. But putting the two together just seemed like a good idea.”
The event took place in the basement of Frees, using both the theater and the big-screen TV in the lounge to play the movies. The theater played the movie in order of when the movies were released, whereas the movies were played in sequential order in the lounge.
Pancakes were made by FHC members, as well as members of Residence Life. There were a variety of pancakes made, including blueberry, chocolate chip, butterscotch, white chocolate, and plain.
“I’m glad that some of our RA’s and Hall Council members were able to combine to bring this about,” said Vi Kerhoulas, the RD of Frees and FHC advisor. “I’m a huge Star Wars fan, so that plus pancakes equals awesomeness.”
Kerhoulas said she was pleased with the amount of people who attended the event.
“I’m really happy,” she said. “The turnout wasn’t huge, but we had a good number of people show up.”
Students who attended the event said they had a good time overall.
“I dig on the free pancakes,” freshman Jordan Renkert said. “Plus, I’ve been a big fan of Star Wars since I was about three. I love Darth Vader’s voice; he’s my hero.”
Junior Beth Hein said she attended to event for the pancakes, as well as to see some of her favorite villains.
“I really love pancakes,” Hein said. “They’re delicious, and it’s even better because they don’t cut me off. Seriously, they’re going to have to get a bouncer to say ‘Beth, get out!’ I also really love the villains; I really enjoy them. Emperor Palpatine is my favorite. He was kind of hardcore.”
The marketing for Star-Cakes also attracted some attendees.
“The posters for the event made me laugh the first time I saw them,” freshman Matt Brown said. “Besides, it’s free pancakes and Star Wars, possibly the two best things in the world!”
